The Gentiles coming into this new Church do not seem to be able to see the differences between it and a Greco-Roman philosopher gathering disciples and educating them in a particular philosophy. Members follow him blindly and whatever they do seems right to them. Obviously, here at Peninsula Bible Church we cannot do that. If it had been left up to us to plan the program by which God would change the world we would never have included a cross. 1-False prophets (2 Corinthians 11:13). I think that some of the ways we have failed to de-paganize is because we are still so focused on the little things that make up the church. It was expected. One of them being the reason to follow a specific pastor. If I was not raised in a Christian home, I think that I would have the same concerns. The cross of Christ is what will heal the fragmentation of Christians wherever they are. I have had people say to me, "Oh, Mr. Stedman, when you speak I see so clearly! Peter was an uneducated, common man and may have appealed to that group of people in Corinth. This is the result of a religious snobbery associated by cliques that produced pride and conflict. 10 I appeal to you, brothers,[ a] by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. Religious snobs want to be a part of a small group who It seems so bland compared to all the other choices out there when really it presents and encourages people to live out a very different and exciting life in the opposite direction of the world. How important is it that there be unity within the Church? It was a glorious work. It is not merely that the Church is everywhere split up into sections, but that this has led to party strife and jealousy. We need to be perfectly joined together in the love of Christ. 2 Corinthians He called to ask whether I thought that would be right or wrong to do. 2- The Churchs division. 7-False zeal for spiritual gifts. It is possible that these divisions represent competing house churches, some founded by Paul, some by Apollos. No man is the Savior; no man can deliver us except Jesus. In fact, Paul never claims disciples. I understand the fact that people have different beliefs and would like to stick to those (it is good to sick to what you believe) but when you get so segregated that you cannot work together anymore, it becomes a serious problem. How important was unity to the apostle Paul, and to the Holy Spirit who moved Him to write this letter to the Church in Corinth? Yet, in reality as long as correct biblical doctrine is being taught no pastor should be viewed in comparison to one another. Now, church unity is a very important matter, and, because of its significance, Paul puts it first in the list of problems he has to deal with here at Corinth. Her hair is messed up! They became symbols of prestige and standing that became divisive factors among the men. God wants the local church congregation and the local community to see the beauty of a church that is unified and fitted together in love. This division in the church was over their own selfish ambitions evidenced in what they wanted. 3- The presence of an immoral member. They were drawing themselves up and saying, "Well, you may be of Paul or of Peter or of Apollos, but we are of Christ! When everybody decides to put the things of Christ first, and is willing to suffer loss that the honor and glory of Christ might be advanced, that is what brings harmony in a congregation. And there are others who are drawn to some speaking style that has attracted them. These preachers draw in masses of people every week who are eager to hear them speak. God only sees one fold, (John 10) and there is only one faith, one Lord, one baptism etc. Webdivided. I dont remember Paul seeing any thing like these issues as other than trivial. And just as the Corinthian church was not above the petty rivalries of its time, neither is the modern church above becoming involved in such shouting matches. It is possible, though, that the divisions among The organ begins the bridal march, and everyone stands. In verses 10-17 of Chapter 1, Paul establishes the fact that there are divisions and begins to deal with them. (1 Corinthians 1:12 RSV) Now, there was the trouble at Corinth. In Matthew 12:25 the Lord Jesus says, Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and any city or house divided against itself shall not stand.. Having listened to Pauls words and the prayer of the Lord Jesus Christ, how important is unity to each of us today? In fact, these divisions are a sign of worldliness. In conjunction with this, some people were questioning Pauls character and authority ( 1 Corinthians 14 ). I hang on every word you say. Why are these thing SO important? 5-Members going to pagan courts to settle disputes. Paul, however, was a good leader. For instance, in the Greco-Roman culture the practice of teacher-disciple relationships was often common and so many Christian converts in Corinth would associate themselves with a particular teacher and be under their discipleship. In my experience though, I find that it is carnal and unspiritual leaders that put up walls and fences between members of the body. The congregation then is to submit to the elders because it has confidence that their decisions were made under the Holy Spirits direction and power. We see similar situations today, with political debates often devolving into a shouting match in which the person who yells their opinion the loudest and the longest is the winner. My impression is that the same sorts of problems evident in Corinth are clearly evident in the contemporary church, whether that is West Michigan or Brisbane. The Corinthian church had many problems, and most of them were the result of pride and placing so much emphasis on social status. The Lords Supper was affected by the divisions between rich and poor and an overall general misunderstanding. The bridesmaids have come down the aisle. A second issue that seems to keep the church divided (the whole church and individual churches) is the little things such as the structure of the service, the type of music played for worship, whether a pastor should always wear a tie, and what color should be used in the bathroom. There he indicates that the problem with cliquishness is that it tends to overemphasize the significance of the human leader. In the year 1 054 the Church was divided into two parts: 1) The Greek Eastern Church 2) The Roman Western Church. But yet the apostle says they are to be of the same mind. Who are we, that we should put our interests and our desires ahead of that of the Lord for his church? When the Corinthians divided into factions, it wasnt so much about core doctrine (nature of God, nature of Christ, the Gospel, the nature of man). They may have carried Pauls teachings of justification by faith and freedom from the Law to an extreme and felt free to do whatever they wanted. Now, how could that be? Because I am a little defensive it seems like they are almost my enemy. Some Corinthian Christians were dividing over church teachers. It is well known that division in the church of Corinth was over leadership. The third danger of groups is given in the latter part of Verse13, and on through the next few verses: Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? Public arguments were commonplace in the Greco-Roman world at the time that Paul was writing to the Corinthian church. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. There are three different causes of divisions in churches that Paul mentions in I Corinthians. We pray that it may be rich and real in our hearts as we live this week together. Paul knew this and said in 1 Corinthians 2:1-2, When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed the testimony about God. They love to listen to someone because he turns them on emotionally. They were dividing over this whole issue, and Paul says it is all wrong. (Even non-denominationals do this, just without claiming a denominational title). Galatians: Freedom through Gods Grace (Wipf & Stock, 2019). It would destroy the unity of the congregation and split them up and provide an inaccurate testimony to the Person of Christ before the watching world. Because the Holy Spirit has but one will, and because a church must be in complete harmony with His will, the leaders must be in complete harmony with each other in that will. It would be great if all of you would think like me, but unfortunately there are stubborn ones among you, there are depraved ones among you, there are those who have different backgrounds than I have, and some of you just do not think like I do! Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? Now, he is not saying that it is wrong to baptize; he himself did it, and acknowledges that he did. The Greek word used here literally means to say the same thing. The content of their messages was in agreement, but the followers of these men probably focused on personality differences and distorted their teachings. These are two common causes of church divisions in the West. The words made complete in verse 10 are translated from a Greek word that was used to speak of mending such things as nets, bones, dislocated joints, broken utensils, and torn garments. 10 I appeal to you, brothers,[ a] by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. In verses 10-12, Paul begins by giving an appeal for unity. Paul condemns their behavior in verse 13 by saying, Has Christ been divided? In other words, have different amounts of Christ been given to different people? Now, Paul says this is all basically, fundamentally wrong. The human condition is, unfortunately, one of comparison that seeks to place oneself or their beliefs over another. (I have been trying for a long time to get my wife to accept that!) The first thing Paul says is that it tends to chop up Christ and parcel him out as though his person and his work came in various packages, thus you lose perspective of the whole of Christian theology.
